Day 5 – Why we love food

by | Jul 5, 2020 | 99 Days of Transformation | 0 comments

Why do we love food so much? Have you ever wondered why we just can’t resist certain foods? And why we would often have it at any cost? Ignoring our health and our deep desire to wear a strapless Vera Wang on our wedding day. These are high prices to pay for a piece of cake and a Lindt bar or three, don’t you think?

But we still do it, sometimes every day. Now, don’t get wrong, there’s nothing wrong with treats but when they become something else, it is a problem. When your treats become an emotional crutch or your escape from boredom, it is a problem.

Our bodies know that we would die without food, so wanting it is deeply ingrained in our very nature. We need it to survive. You probably don’t need those four choc chop cookies after lunch, but your body doesn’t know that.

The truth is, our relationship with food is complicated and one that we can never break up with. But it isn’t really all your fault.

It could be your DNA. A study shows that as much as 45% of our food preferences are determined by genetics.

The rest is learnt. Remember the first time you tried Gin, it wasn’t very good, but with perseverance you now have quite a taste for it.

Then there is the emotional association we have, some foods just makes us feel good. No one has ever binged on a punnet of broccolli after a fight with their boyfriend.

Bon appétit!

Some Ideas

Plan your meals

This is the best advice I can give you. Plan, decide, cook meals in advance and take meals with you to work. Have a post workout protein shake ready. There is so mush you can do to make this really simple and easy on you. Planning can save you money, time and heartache.

Eat for the right reasons

If you’re bored, find something to do. Why not go for a walk or do burpees until the impulse to snack passes. Very often, it’s just a habit that you need to break, it’s not that hard once you actually try.

When you’re upset, have a warm cup of tea or find a new go to. Don’t reach for the ice cream tub while you have no control and eat the whole thing.
